What Causes Wrinkles?

We all hate looking in the mirror to find a wrinkle that wasn’t there before. It makes us feel older, less attractive, and reminds us that we’re aging and getting older. So, what causes wrinkles? Knowing this information can help us to prevent wrinkles from happening in the first place; leaving us with smooth, beautiful skin. While we cannot prevent all causes, there are quite a few that we can.

What Causes Wrinkles?

The Sun

The largest cause of wrinkles is the sun. The sun, which is beneficial to our health and that we wait all winter to feel its warmth again, can also cause us harm. Sun damage is very real and not always readily apparent. We know that it is not good when we get a sunburn, but you don’t have to get a sunburn to suffer from the negative effects of sun exposure.

When our skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, or that trip to the tanning salon, it starts to break down the connective tissue that keeps it smooth and supple. Not only does this result in wrinkles, but it also causes that leathery-looking skin, which no one wants.

How to prevent wrinkles from the sun? The biggest thing you can do is to limit your sun exposure in the first place. Since it is not practical or feasible to always avoid the sun, we need to look at other options. If possible, try to avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm. Whenever you do go out into the sun, you need to protect yourself. This means always wearing sunscreen and making sure to reapply it throughout the day. You should also try to wear clothing that limits exposure, such as a hat that keeps your face shaded or longer sleeves.

Age

As we age, our skin starts to lose its elasticity, leading to sagging and wrinkles, which also become more apparent as time passes by. While we cannot directly stop the clock from moving forward, there is still a lot that we can do. My biggest recommendation is to adopt a complete system for taking care of yourself and your skin, such as the Ageless Body System.

Other steps that you can take include making sure that you are getting enough sleep each night. A lack of sleep leads to increased wrinkles. Also related to sleep is how you sleep. To prevent wrinkles as you age, make sure that you are sleeping on your back. People that sleep on their side (guilty!) or stomach increase wrinkles. There are also a lot of anti aging foods that you should incorporate into your diet. If you’re a smoker, do what you can to quit. This not only results in more wrinkles, but actually increases your skin’s aging process.

Just taking care of your skin as you age is important for prevention. Moisturizer is something very simple that has a huge effect on the appearance of your skin. Other skin care products include those with retinol (vitamin A), AHAs, vitamin C (a topical variety), pentapeptides, and idebenone. If you are more interested in skin care procedures, botox, dermabrasion, wrinkle fillers (such as Juvaderm), chemical peels, and skin resurfacing.

Repeated Facial Expressions

Facial expressions cause creases that our skin is unable to come back from over time as skin loses its elasticity. While we don’t want to go around with completely blank stares so we’re not moving our face, there are situations that we can easily correct. Squinting is a major repeated facial expression that some people use. We usually squint because we cannot see well. If that is the case, see your optometrist to have your vision checked. If you already know you need glasses, make sure that you use them. If you’re fine throughout the day, but squint while activities like reading, look into a pair of reading glasses for just those situations.
